About Ed Sheeran

Born in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire and raised in Framlingham, Suffolk, Ed Sheeran moved to London at 18. In early 2011, Sheeran independently released the extended play No. 5 Collaborations Project and sold it through his website. The album reached No. 1 on the UK Indie Singles Chart and later on that year he signed with Asylum Records. His debut studio album + (read as “plus”) was released on 9 September 2011, where it debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200.

Career beginnings

Ed Sheeran’s career began in 2006 when he signed with Asylum Records, where he released his first EP, The Orange Room. He then released two other EPs in 2008 and 2009 titled Loose Change and Songs I Wrote With Amy, respectively. In 2010, Sheeran released his debut studio album + (pronounced “plus”), which peaked at number one on the UK Albums Chart and has been certified seven times Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). The album also reached number one in Ireland and Denmark within a year of its release.

Sheeran’s popularity rose after releasing his second studio album x (pronounced “multiply”) in 2014; it peaked at number one in several countries including Australia, Canada and New Zealand. It was certified six times platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA)[9], four times platinum by Music Canada[10] and double platinum by Recorded Music NZ. Ed opened for Taylor Swift on her Red Tour between 2013-2014.

2011–12: + and international success

In 2011, Sheeran released his first extended play (EP), +, which was initially self-released via the Ambition label. He then signed with Atlantic Records and was a part of their roster for three years.

Sheeran’s second EP, No. 5 Collaborations Project, was released on 12 December 2012 as a free download. It includes collaborations with Rudimental on the single “Bloodstream”, Ed Townend on “Nina” (featured in an advert for new ITV drama series Lightfields) and Ellie Goulding on “Walking Away” (featured in a TV spot for season 3 Episode 7 of Game of Thrones).

In 2013 Sheeran began to establish himself as a solo artist with his first headlining tour dates in North America; he also signed with Creative Artists Agency. On 23 February 2013 he released another free download titled No. 6 Collaborations Project featuring Mike Snow who previously collaborated with him on The A Team. In March 2013 Sheeran sang at the Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey where he performed “Your Song” by Elton John.

2014–2016: X and tour

Ed Sheeran’s second studio album, X (pronounced “multiply”), was released on 20 June 2014. The album was named after the Roman numeral for 10,000, a reference to its total sales in its first week. It debuted at number one in the UK and US. X also became the most streamed album of all time with over 260 million streams in three days. The single “Thinking Out Loud” achieved 4x platinum certification in the US and 6x platinum certification in the UK.

X went straight to number one on iTunes worldwide upon release, even though it had been out since midnight in some countries and was available later than others. In total it sold over 1 million copies worldwide within 24 hours of release and over 2 million copies within 48 hours—making it one of only two albums ever to sell 2 million copies worldwide within 48 hours.

2017–present: ÷, collaborations, and hiatus

When ÷ was released in March 2017, it was a huge success. It was the first album to sell over one million copies in its first week on sale since Adele’s 25 the previous year. The album sold 672,000 physical copies and 437,000 downloads within that time frame. Sheeran also released his second single from ÷ titled “Castle on the Hill”. The song peaked at number 1 on both UK Singles Chart and US Billboard Hot 100. He performed it live at every date of his world tour in support of ÷.

A month later he released his third single “Shape of You”, which peaked at number 1 on US Billboard Hot 100 for 8 consecutive weeks making him the artist with most number one singles since 2000 (15). His fourth single “Perfect” featuring Beyoncé reached number 1 in US Billboard Hot 100 after debuting at 2nd position while peaking at 2nd position as well (with only 2 songs having debuted within top 10).

On November 19th 2017 Sheeran announced he would take a break from music due to mental health issues which has been ongoing since 2015.
