Joseph Leonard Bonamassa was born on May 8, 1977, in New Hartford, New York.  He grew up in Utica, New York, in a musical family – his parents were musicians and owned a music store called Bonamassa Guitars. Bonamassa was exposed to British blues rock records by Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck from a very young age, which greatly inspired him. 

He started playing guitar at the age of 4, encouraged by his father who was an avid music fan.  At age 7, he could play Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix songs note-for-note, surpassing what his guitar-playing father could teach him.

Mentorship and Early Career

  • When he was 11 years old, Bonamassa was mentored and trained by American guitar legend Danny Gatton, learning country, jazz, and even polka styles.
  • He would sit in with Gatton’s band whenever they played in New York during this time.
  • At age 12, Bonamassa had his own band called Smokin’ Joe Bonamassa, which gigged around western New York and Pennsylvania on weekends.
