Marcus King Biography
Early Life and Musical Roots
Marcus King was born on March 11, 1996 in Greenville, South Carolina. Music was in his blood from the start – he comes from a long line of musicians, with his grandfather being a country guitarist and his father, Marvin King, a well-known blues guitarist in South Carolina.
At a very young age, Marcus began playing guitar, and by age eight he was already performing on stage with his father[3]. At age eleven, he even played guitar on one of his father’s albums. Growing up immersed in music, King was destined to follow in his family’s footsteps.
Musical Education and Development
As a teenager, King juggled playing club gigs at night and attending school in the morning[3]. However, deciding to fully pursue a career in music, he made the bold choice to drop out of high school in his junior year and get his GED instead.
King took an academic approach to his musical education. He studied his favorite guitar players in depth, especially drawing influence from The Allman Brothers Band co-founder Duane Allman, B.B. King, Albert King, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard.
To further hone his skills, King studied jazz theory and jazz performance with Steve Watson at the Fine Arts Center in Greenville, South Carolina. This diverse musical background would shape his eclectic sound.
Rise to Fame with The Marcus King Band
In his teens, King started fronting his own musical groups, describing their sound as “soul-influenced psychedelic Southern rock”. The Marcus King Band began to gain traction, and in 2014, a video of King jamming at Norman’s Guitars went viral on YouTube, racking up millions of views.
The band caught the attention of renowned guitarist Warren Haynes, who signed them to his Evil Teen label and produced their 2015 debut album “Soul Insight” and 2016 self-titled follow-up. King was just 19 at the time, but his talent impressed Haynes and other famous mentors like Derek Trucks.
The Marcus King Band continued to release acclaimed albums that showcased King’s growth as a songwriter and guitarist, including 2018’s “Carolina Confessions” and 2020’s “El Dorado,” which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album.
Solo Career and Critical Acclaim
Though initially known as lead singer and guitarist of The Marcus King Band, King began releasing music under his own name to huge acclaim. His 2020 solo debut “El Dorado” was produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and landed a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album.
King followed it up with 2022’s “Young Blood,” another Auerbach-produced effort that debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart. Critics hailed the album as a “staggeringly confident” work that confirmed King as a major talent.
Over the years, King has earned a reputation as an electrifying live performer and guitar prodigy, drawing comparisons to rock legends for his soulful singing and expressive six-string skills. He continues to win over fans across musical genres.
Personal Life and Accolades
In February 2023, King married Briley Hussey in a lavish ceremony at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. The couple bonded over their shared love of music, with Hussey even joining King on stage at some of his performances.
When he’s not touring or recording, King enjoys bass fishing as a way to unwind and connect with nature[4]. His musical accomplishments have earned him awards from the American Advertising Federation and Graphis.
At just 27 years old, Marcus King has already made an indelible mark on the music scene, and he’s only just getting started. With his virtuosic talent, soulful songwriting, and cross-generational appeal, King is poised for a long and influential career as a torchbearer for rock and blues music.
