Peso Pluma Biography

Peso Pluma, whose real name is Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, was born on June 15, 1999, in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico. Growing up in Guadalajara, he began playing the guitar at the age of 15 by watching videos on YouTube. Pluma started writing songs in a diary, admitting to being ridiculed by peers. He described his initial approach to songwriting as a form of therapy, saying, “That’s where I’d write how I was feeling, then I realized some stuff would rhyme. I kept practicing and became better with time.”

Pluma’s career began in 2020 when he worked with his cousin, fellow singer and songwriter, Roberto “Tito” Laija Garcia, also known as Tito Double P, on releasing two live albums, “Disco en Vivo” and “Disco en Vivo, Vol. 2.” These collections consisted of recordings of his performances around Jalisco and were published by the independent label El Cartel de los Ángeles.

In April 2020, Pluma released his debut studio album, “Ah y Qué?,” featuring twelve songs and collaborations with El Choforo, Lalo Reyes, and Jorge Morales El Jilguero. He followed up with singles like “Mil Historias” with Hector Rubio and “El Petter” with Decreto Real.

Pluma’s second studio album, “Efectos Secundarios,” was released in March 2021, preceded by the singles “Con Dinero Baila el Perro” and “Lo Que Me Das.” He then issued the single “Por Las Noches” in June 2021, a slowed-down sierreño track about an unintended breakup.

In 2022, Pluma achieved a breakthrough with his collaboration with Raul Vega on the single “El Belicón,” which sold 480,000 units and was certified 8× Platinum Latin by the RIAA. He followed up this success with the extended play “Sembrando” and the 5× Platinum Latin-certified controversial duet “Siempre Pendientes” with Luis R Conriquez.

Pluma’s collaborations with Natanael Cano, “AMG” and “PRC,” became massive hits in the Latin music community after their use on TikTok, both charting on the Billboard Hot 100. In April 2023, Pluma and Eslabon Armado made history with “Ella Baila Sola,” becoming the first regional Mexican song to reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, eventually peaking at number four.

With his distinct musical style dominated by corridos tumbados (Sinaloa-style sierreño corridos with elements of Latin urban, specifically Latin hip hop and reggaeton), Pluma is considered to be a major contributor to the revival of corridos. His crossover appeal has made him the most streamed artist in Mexico.

Pluma’s third studio album, “Genesis,” peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 in July 2023. The commercial growth of his music has boosted his popularity worldwide, simultaneously placing eight songs on the Hot 100 in the week of April 29, 2023, making him the Mexican act with the most Spanish-language entries in the US.

Throughout his career, Peso Pluma has collaborated with various artists, including Bizarrap, Junior H, Becky G, and more. With his unique blend of traditional Mexican music and modern influences, Peso Pluma continues to be one of the most exciting and influential young artists in the Latin music scene.
