Ateez Biography

Formation and Pre-debut Activities (2016-2018)

Plans for ATEEZ began in 2016 after KQ Entertainment staff discovered a letter and sample mixtape from Kim Hongjoong, who would eventually become the group’s leader. In 2018, the agency launched the pre-debut reality show “Code Name Is Ateez” to introduce the group.

ATEEZ also released pre-debut content like dance and vocal practice videos on their YouTube channel KQ Fellaz. The members trained in Los Angeles in preparation for their debut.

Debut and Early Releases (2018-2019)

ATEEZ officially debuted on October 24, 2018 with the EP “Treasure EP.1: All to Zero,” which peaked at #7 on the Gaon Album Chart. They quickly followed up with a second EP “Treasure EP.2: Zero to One” in January 2019.

The group embarked on their first world tour, “The Expedition Tour,” in 2019, with sold-out shows in the United States and Europe. They also performed at KCON in Los Angeles that summer.

ATEEZ released three more EPs in 2019 as part of their “Treasure” series, establishing themselves as one of K-pop’s fastest rising rookie groups.

Breakthrough and International Success (2020-present)

In 2020, ATEEZ launched their “Fever” series with the EP “Zero: Fever Part.1,” which became their first release to be certified platinum in Korea.. Follow-up EPs “Zero: Fever Part.2” and “Zero: Fever Epilogue” also topped the Korean charts.

The group’s 2020 world tour was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but they stayed connected with fans through online concerts and their reality show “ATEEZ Fever Road”.

ATEEZ’s international popularity continued to rise with the release of the “Zero” series and their first Japanese albums in 2021-2022. They won worldwide fans’ choice awards at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in 2020 and 2023.

In July 2022, ATEEZ released their 8th Korean EP “The World EP.1: Movement,” which showcased a harder-edged sound. It was followed by the single album “Spin Off: From the Witness” and EPs “The World EP.2: Outlaw” and “The World EP.Fin: Will”.

ATEEZ embarked on their “The Fellowship: Beginning of the End” world tour in 2022, playing arenas across the U.S., Europe and Japan. As of December 2023, the group has sold over 4 million albums worldwide.

Philanthropy

The individual members of ATEEZ are also known for their charitable donations:

  • In 2022, San donated ₩50 million ($38,680) to his hometown of Namhae to be used for development projects and youth welfare. The town gave him ₩1.5 million worth of beef, which he donated to 22 single-parent households.
  • In November 2023, Hongjoong donated ₩50 million to the Korea Childhood Leukemia Foundation, with funds raised from a birthday photo exhibition and his own personal contribution.
