Jelly Roll Biography
Early Life and Upbringing
Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason Bradley DeFord, was born on December 4, 1984 in the Antioch neighborhood of Nashville, Tennessee. His father, Horace “Buddy” DeFord, ran a wholesale meat business and worked as a bookie on the side. Jelly Roll’s mother, whose name is not public, struggled with drug addiction and mental health issues.
Growing up, Jelly Roll was given his nickname because he was an overweight child. He credits his mother for inspiring his love of music and storytelling abilities from a young age. Around 9 or 10 years old, he wrote his first rap song.
Jelly Roll’s parents divorced when he was 13, after which he felt responsible for taking care of his mother financially and began selling drugs. He maintained a close relationship with his father until Buddy’s death from cancer in 2019.
Criminal History and Addiction
Jelly Roll was first arrested at age 14 and has stated he went to jail around 40 times for various offenses like drug dealing. One of his most serious charges was aggravated robbery at 16, for which he was charged as an adult and served over a year in jail.
In addition to selling drugs, Jelly Roll struggled with addiction to substances like cough syrup, Xanax and cocaine. He was incarcerated again at 23 for drug dealing.
