Usher Biography

Usher Raymond IV, known mononymously as Usher, is a Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, actor, and businessman who has become one of the most successful R&B artists of his generation.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born on October 14, 1978, in Dallas, Texas, Usher grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee. At age 12, he moved with his family to Atlanta, Georgia, where he joined the church choir his mother directed. Usher performed in numerous talent competitions and scored well on the television show “Star Search,” which led to him signing with LaFace Records at age 14.

In 1994, at age 15, Usher began working on his self-titled debut album, co-produced by Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. The album featured his first gold record, “Think of You,” which became an international hit.

Rise to Stardom

Usher’s sophomore album, “My Way,” released in 1997, generated the hit “You Make Me Wanna,” which topped the R&B chart for 11 weeks and reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The album’s next singles, “Nice & Slow” and “My Way,” also went platinum, with “Nice & Slow” becoming his first number one pop hit.

His third album, “8701,” produced two number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100, “U Remind Me” and “U Got It Bad. “U Remind Me” also earned Usher his first Grammy Award.

Confessions and Superstardom

In 2004, Usher released his landmark album “Confessions,” which spawned the hugely popular hits “Yeah!” featuring Lil Jon and Ludacris, “Burn,” and “My Boo” with Alicia Keys. “Confessions” earned Usher three Grammy Awards and was certified Diamond, solidifying his status as a global superstar.

Subsequent albums like “Here I Stand” (2008), “Raymond v. Raymond” (2010), and “Looking 4 Myself” (2012) all topped the Billboard 200 and R&B/Hip-Hop charts, producing numerous hit singles and earning additional Grammys.

Acting and Business Ventures

In addition to his music career, Usher has also acted in films like “The Faculty” (1998), “Light It Up” (1999), and “Hands of Stone” (2016). He also served as a coach on the television singing competition “The Voice” in 2013 and 2019.

Usher’s business ventures include becoming a part-owner of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers in 2005, founding a fragrance line, and heading the New Look Foundation, a charity that helps fund children in foster care and service programs.

Personal Life

Usher has four children: sons Usher “Cinco” V and Naviyd Ely with ex-wife Tameka Foster, and daughter Sovereign Bo and son Sire Castrello with girlfriend Jenn Goicoechea. In 2017, Usher faced legal issues related to allegations of transmitting herpes to sexual partners, which he denied.

Legacy and Influence

With a career spanning over two decades, Usher has sold over 75 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His smooth vocals, slick dance moves, and undeniable stage presence have influenced countless artists who have followed in his footsteps.

Usher’s impact extends beyond music, as he has used his platform to support various charitable causes and speak out on social issues like racial profiling and police brutality. As a multi-talented entertainer and philanthropist, Usher’s legacy as an R&B icon is firmly cemented.
