The Arizona Cardinals are a professional American football team based in Glendale, Arizona. The Cardinals compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division.
The team was founded as an independent club in 1898 by Frank Ellison and Alex Marchetti, and played in the Phoenix area until 1930 when it merged with the Chicago Bears for one season before moving to St. Louis and becoming part of the NFL there. The franchise returned to Arizona in 1988 and has been playing at University of Phoenix Stadium since 2006 after spending their first ten years at Sun Devil Stadium on campus at Arizona State University while they awaited construction on their new home stadium.
In 2015, they were valued at US$1 billion making them thirteenth most valuable among all sports franchises globally and sixth most valuable in North America behind only New York Yankees ($3 billion), Los Angeles Dodgers ($2 billion), Dallas Cowboys ($1.8 billion), New England Patriots ($1.6 billion) and Washington Redskins ($1billion). They have won two NFL championships: 1925 and 1947 (as Chicago Cardnals).
