Golden 1 Center is owned by the City of Sacramento, operated by AEG Worldwide and managed by AEG Facilities, a subsidiary of Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG). The total construction cost was $558 million. AECOM was responsible for the design while Turner Construction handled building operations.

The Maloofs’ relationship with Sacramento had become strained over the years because of a failed plan to build a new arena for the Kings in 2006. This led to attendance problems and a general failure to improve the roster.
Ranadive had a plan to build an 18,000-seat arena that would be more intimate than other NBA arenas, hoping that this would help boost home court advantage.
